Introduction to Modern Calligraphy
Instructor: Mon Voir’s in house Calligrapher Brooke Dieda
In this two hour lesson, you will learn techniques of modern calligraphy from the ground up using a pen and nib dipped into ink. You will learn how to construct strokes and shapes, letter-forms and words, along with basic tools for composition and overall design and structure. This lesson will not only cover basic instruction, but also provide you with an introduction to intermediate techniques, as well as coaching and direction for the next steps you will need to advance your lettering in order to develop your own style of calligraphy.
After this lesson, you should be able to apply the following:
- demonstrate basic knowledge of pointed pen calligraphy
- when and how to apply pressure and release on the pen
- full grasp of how to structure the alphabet
- show an understanding in basic flourishes and stylistic techniques
You will be provided a kit that includes the Introduction to Modern Calligraphy Booklet, curated by Jenna Rainey, along with a pen holder, a nib and paper for practice.

Intermediate Modern Calligraphy

Have you already been practicing your calligraphy, but are looking for more direction and coaching to take it to the next level? The Intermediate Modern Calligraphy lesson is for you! In this two hour lesson, you will be able to dive further into the things that are required by all professional calligraphers such as connecting letters, flourishing, composition, style development and mixing gouache for custom colors. A beginner calligraphy class is required before taking this intermediate course.
After this lesson, you should be able to apply the following:
- show an understanding of added flourishes and composition
- how to mix gouache to create a custom color
- demonstrate more advanced knowledge of letter connections
- full grasp of how to develop your own style
